Coach Rudi Lengieza

Class of 2026

Chicopee, MA

Daniel “Rudi” Lengieza is a revered figure in Western Massachusetts high school athletics, best known for his extraordinary 52-year coaching career at Holyoke Catholic High School, where he shaped generations of runners and built enduring cross country and track traditions.

Rudi’s influence at Holyoke Catholic extended beyond coaching results — he was instrumental in encouraging broader participation in the sport. In the late 1970s, it was through his support as then-boys coach that girls began competing in cross country at Catholic, laying the foundation for a strong program that would grow through the 1980s and beyond.

His teams won 4 Western Mass Cross Country titles, including 3 in a row between 1972-74. His teams also won 2 Western Mass Outdoor Track & Field team titles and 1 Indoor Track title.

Over the course of more than five decades, Rudi became synonymous with dedication, leadership, and community commitment. His remarkable tenure has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Holyoke Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2008.

Rudi’s legacy has also been memorialized physically in the community: the cross country course at the Whiting Street Reservoir in Holyoke was named the Rudi Lengieza Cross Country Course in honor of his impact on the sport and local runners.

A beloved coach, mentor, and cornerstone of Holyoke Catholic athletics, Daniel “Rudi” Lengieza’s contributions continue to inspire athletes throughout Western Massachusetts and beyond.
